Press Kit: Spa & Fitness Experts

The Club at The Claremont employs top-rated fitness instructors, trainers and athletes - all certified in their specific fields - to provide expert instruction in a wide variety of activities from strength training and ski conditioning to pre-natal exercise tips and skin therapy.

Each expert has his or her own specialties, but all members of The Club at The Claremont team focus on the overall wellness of the mind and body. First and foremost, individuals must be comfortable with who they are from every aspect. The Club fitness team is a true support system for its members, encouraging them to strive for inner peace.

The Club at The Claremont’s philosophy is to give people what they need to feed their souls. Success is driven by anticipation of what people need and trainers don’t base treatment plans on trends. The ultimate goal is for guests to feel secure about themselves and know they are smart, attractive and can accomplish anything.

Michael Simpson – Fitness Choreographer
Michael Simpson, fitness director at The Club at The Claremont, has been with The Claremont since 1999. His extensive background in dance makes him an expert in creative fitness techniques and alternatives. Whether he’s teaching an aerobics class, spinning or The Club’s Muscle, Fluidity and Stillness class, all core movements are choreopgrahed. His “core” oriented philosophy uses Pilates and Yoga to promote a long, centered physique, like that of a dancer, which he believes are the basics of becoming an excellent athelete.

His choreographed moves are low-key but effective in keeping the whole body trained and balanced from head to toe. “Attacking” the body with dozens of movements and exercises keep the central nervous system always slightly off-guard instead of settling into patterns and taking it easy.

Simpson’s enthusiasm for fitness and wellness rubs off on every staff member whose caring, creative and passionate attitudes help them truly connect with Club members and resort guests.

After training Kevin MacKenzie, director of American Ballet Theater, Simpson has gained much clout in the fitness and dance community. His specialty tips include back-packing, stress relief, couples stretching, dance-based strength techniques, yoga and pilates.

The Claremont Experience
Born of a “golden” era, The Claremont Resort & Spa is perched majestically on a pristine mountainside in the Berkeley Hills, standing watch over the glistening Golden Gates of San Francisco Bay. Whether guests choose to partake in a fine meal and expertly poured cocktail at AAA Four-Diamond Jordan’s or casual Paragon Bar & Café, indulge in a “journey” from around the world in the Claremont Spa or spend the afternoon poolside at The Club at The Claremont bathed in rays that once tanned Barrymore and Garbo, this classic landmark is defined through its culture and distinctive atmosphere. The Claremont is a tradition, an entitlement of generations and America’s quintessential grand resort: its 279 uniquely designed rooms have a AAA Four-Diamond status where guests luxuriate in the famously captivating bay views enticing them to explore San Francisco and California’s wine country.
